Hominidae
Until recently, only humans were in the family Hominidae, other great apes were
put in the family Pongidae. Now humans share this family along with Chimpanzees,
Gorillas, and Orangutans. Over the last two decades, evidence linking humans to
Chimpanzees and Gorillas have grown, especially with the increase of molecular
techniques. Hominidae are the largest of the primates, they have robust bodies
and well-developed forearms. Both their thumb and big toe are opposable, except
in humans who have lost opposability in their big toe. All their digits have
flattened nails, and no hominid has a tail. Skeletal differences between hominids
and other primates are due to their upright or semi-upright stance.
